Trekking and mountaneering in and around Aizawl

Trekking in Phawngpui National ParkPhawngpui National Park or Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park is situated about 300 km from Aizawl. Trekking in this national park would be a thrilling experience. While trekking one can enjoy the thin stretch of clouds in the mountain area which make it blue in appearance and gives it an ethereal sight. The edges of the mountain are very steep and sharp so one has to be a little careful while trekking. The most spectacular thing is the semi circular beautiful cliff which has a blunt and deep fall. The closest human settlement is Sangau village at the base.
Trekking in TawiTrekking in the Tawi Wildlife area located about 115 kms from Aizawl will also be a thrilling adventure. Trekkers would be able to enjoy wonderful trekking in the forest area along with enjoying the rare flora and fauna here like tiger, leopard, barking deer, jungle cat, serow, jungle fowl and hill mynah. Months from October to March can be a good time to trek in the forest area.
Trekking in MurlenTrekkers will also experience great trekking in the Murlen national park area situated 245 kms from the state capital. While trekking through the forest area you can enjoy species of mammals, medicinal plants, species of birds and bamboos and orchids in the park area. If you are lucky enough you can see tiger, leopard, barking deer, hoolock gibbon, squirrel, kallej pheasant, hill myna amongst others in the park area.
Situated 29 km from Aizawl, Reiek is a tourist spot known for its forest cover. The Reiek hill is surrounded by thick lush green temperate trees and bushes felicitating trekking. Trekkers trekking through the forest area could enjoy fascinating variety of birds. Reiek hill is a picturesque hill from where the plains of Bangladesh could be seen on a clear day. Hmuifang Mountaineers will find Hmuifang Mountain a thrilling place for mountaineering. Hmuifang Mountain is located at a distance of 50 kms to the south of Aizawl. Mountaineers will be delighted to explore the virgin forests and the beautiful cliffs of the mountain. Mountain biking, walking trial, bio diversity trekking could be enjoyed here. Most of the hill side here is vertical so it can be quite challenging for rock climbers. A tourist resort namely Hmuifang Tourist Resort is located at the scenic peak of the mountain where mountaineers can have a comfortable stay.

Caving in Aizawl
Amomg the adventurous sports caving is also an enjoyable activity in Aizawl. You can enjoy caving in Khuangchera Puk, a cave situated in Ailawng near Reiek, about 30 kms from Aizawl. The cave is named after Khuangchera, the legendary Mizo warrior who lived here in the late 19th century. It is the longest cave in Mizoram having a length of 162 m and vertical range of 10m deep. Caving in Khuangchera Puk provides a variety of cave experiences like darkness, specific odours, peculiar acoustics, tactile interaction with earthly surfaces and so on.
